Below is the text of two replies received from the National Institue for Biological Control and Standards in response to specific questions relating to the testing of plague vaccine testing carried out in the UK:

11 April 1997

Thank you for your letter dated 7 April 1997.

In response to your enquiry, I am writing to confirm that it was MOD who supplied the batch of plague vaccine (CUTTER) 10H03A to NIBSC for testing in 1990.

2 May 1997

Thank you for your letter dated 22 April 1997.

In response to your further enquiry I can inform you that testing of the above batch was completed by 16th January 1991 (when the results of the testing were reported to MOD), and that the batch was received from MOD towards the end of 1990. The testing was requested by the Head Pharamacist, MOD, to whom the results were reported. The materials received for such testing were in the manufacturers original packaging and bore the manufacturer’s labels.
