BioPort exacerbated the mistrust after multiple run-ins with
the FDA and after news spread of its strong financial ties to
military brass. On top of these problems, one month after
DOD launched its mandatory program, BioPort stopped
production to renovate its facilities to meet FDA standards,
which explains why the stockpile of anthrax vaccine has
dwindled to a trivial amount. But why has the government not
contracted with other companies to make the vaccine? Why
has the public not created a commercial market that would
lead vaccine makers into the arena on their own? And why
has so little research been devoted to understanding this
disease and formulating an even better vaccine? These are
deeper, more difficult questions.
